Recently, the Police Department in Montenegro reported ongoing investigations into multiple fires across several municipalities. Since the start of the month, authorities noted approximately eight individuals under scrutiny as part of a broader effort to uncover the root causes behind the recent blazes.
In a continuing development, updated findings identified two more suspects tied to the fires in Zeta and Zabjelo, following collaborative investigations with the Podgorica Chief Public Prosecutor. Disturbingly, three children aged 13 and 11 were also linked to incidents; one allegedly started a fire with a suitable vehicle in Zeta, while the other two were with him at the time.
Due to the age of the minors, the police will pursue misdemeanor charges against their parents for child neglect under the relevant Violence Protection law. A suspect labeled SM (49) has been named in connection with a fire on low vegetation near 27 Marta Street in Zabjelo. Details were compiled and forwarded to the Podgorica Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Across the past three months, investigators have identified 14 individuals in relation to open-area fires. During the fire season in June and July, six people were brought to trial on charges of general danger across Podgorica, Herceg Novi, Ulcinj, Danilovgrad, and Bijelo Polje.
As August brought harsher weather, operational efforts intensified. Eight suspects were identified for involvement in initiating or exacerbating fires, with authorities also pinpointing those who helped prevent greater damage. Specific cases include two persons facing criminal proceedings for fires in Zaljevo (Bar) and Bijelo Polje’s Bijov Grob region, while a case in Sutomore is under review, and files related to fires in Kuči, City Kvart, Zeta, and Zabjelo await subsequent action.
Investigations continue to uncover three incidents of spontaneous burning that escalated into fires, including two cases involving electrical conductors. In the Budva municipality’s Kufin region, authorities determined that fires spread to Buljarica and Čanj due to spontaneous vehicle ignition.
The Police Department emphasizes sustained preventive and deterrent measures. Officials plan to maintain close cooperation with local governments to safeguard life and property in the coming period.
