Montenegro Inflation Eases: Latest Economic Slowdown Shows Cooling Prices

Recent data from Montenegro Statistics Office (MONSTAT) indicates that consumer prices continued to climb, but the pace of inflation has cooled slightly. In July 2025, the month-over-month increase was 0.6% on average. The more notable figure is the annual inflation rate, with prices up by 4.5% compared to July of the previous year. During January–July 2025, the cumulative rise stood at 3.5% on average.

Which items stood out in this month’s inflation? MONSTAT’s analysis points to the following groups as the main contributors to the monthly rise:

  • Fuel and Transportation: Higher prices in airline travel and motor fuels plus lubricants pushed this sector up by about 2.6%.
  • Food and Accommodation: Restaurant and hotel services surged by approximately 3.4%, with notable contributions from meat, fruit, dairy products, eggs, bread, and cereals within food items.
  • Energy and Other Essentials: Housing, water, electricity, and gas costs increased by around 0.8%, alongside higher solid fuel prices.

On the flip side, some categories eased. Clothing and footwear prices declined by about 3.7%, and there was a small dip in communication services (0.1%). Overall, these data suggest persistent inflation pressures in Montenegro, though the rate is moving away from double-digit growth on an annual basis. Key factors influencing the inflation trajectory include changes in fuel and food prices.
